Gatecliffe, though he didn't play for the first team, is included as he may have played for the second team or cricket or bowls for Hunslet. He is included on the Roll of Honour. Gatecliffe joined the 62nd West Riding Cyclists Corps, which later was absorbed into the 18th Battalion. When recruiting, of the 200 new members of the Cyclists Corps needed, 120 came from Leeds. Their war training was at Thoresby Park in Sept, 1915, but all had to be proficient cyclists. From there, they were deployed on observation and reconnaissance work, giving 'splendid service' in the rear-guard of the Spring retreat of 1918 and the Autumn advance.
