Clement was born on 31st March, 1894, in Halifax. When he joined the Royal Navy in February, 1916, he was a motor mechanic. He had grey eyes, brown hair and a fresh complexion. He was 5ft 7ins (170cm), with a chest when fully expanded of 37 ins (92cm). Like Harold Buck, he began his training in Plymouth to be an Ordinary Seaman. Clement, service number J.50096, was on Vivid I, a naval barracks, where he stayed till 9 Aug, 1916. He was then invalided-out with heart disease and saw no further active service. He still would have received 2 medals, the War Medal and the Victory medal. On his demob papers, it says his character was 'Very good,' and his ability 'Satisfactory.' It also states that he was not eligible for a war gratuity.
