Hunslet is the inner-city area of Leeds which is south of the River Aire. Its heritage is one of heavy industry specifically engineering, chemicals, coal mining, glass making, mills and pottery manufacture. The Rugby Club has always been proud to say that it was run by working men with working men as players. During the Rugby Club's periods of great success it raised the spirits of the whole community and lifted them out of the drudgery and bleakness of life in the area. Its success made people proud to live in Hunslet and no club in the Rugby League has relied more on local players than Hunslet.
Hunslet players were chosen to represent Yorkshire, England and Great Britain and some travelled to the antipodes to do battle on the rugby pitch. These players have been, and continue to be, wonderful role models for local boys, youths and young men. We need to remember them and their stories. We need to show that, no matter how humble your origins, an individual can develop great skills and proficiency and by working together as a team can beat anybody.
